![]() Stop-motion whiz Nick Park won his fourth career Academy Award in 2005 for “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.” In 2018, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller finally won their first Oscars for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” ![]() Renowned Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki won for “Spirited Away” in 2002. Several legends of modern animation have had victories here too. Last year Guillermo del Toro won his third career Oscar for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.” Before receiving nominations for “Mad Max: Fury Road,” George Miller won the category in 2006 for “Happy Feet.” After directing the first three movies in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, Gore Verbinski took home this award for “Rango” in 2011. The category has also resulted in Oscar wins for several people better known for their work outside the sphere of animation. Six other people have prevailed twice: Brad Bird (“The Incredibles” in 2004 and “Ratatouille” in 2007), Byron Howard (“Zootopia” in 2016 and “Encanto” in 2021), Jonas Rivera (“Inside Out” in 2015 and “Toy Story 4” in 2019), Clark Spencer (“Zootopia” in 2016 and “Encanto” in 2021), Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo” in 2003 and “WALL-E” in 2008) and Lee Unkrich (“Toy Story 3” in 2010 and “Coco” in 2017). Pete Docter has won this category the most with three wins under his belt: “Up” (2009), “Inside Out” (2016) and “Soul” (2020).
